Sunday School Planning Tips
by Sue Jakes

Avoid the last-minute panic of preparing for your class on late Saturday evening. One of the best ways to begin is to organize your materials for the entire unit before the first Sunday of the quarter. There are several ways to categorize your lesson materials.

  • Have a folder for each student. Each week the students can come into the room and pull their own papers and activity sheets. You can pull the files for the younger children.
  • Have a folder for each week. This can include all papers, activity sheets, visual aids and memory work that you need for each lesson.
  • Separate out student papers, memory work sheets, activity sheets and visual aids by lesson.

Being prepared is the key. Making your class a priority in your life is learned over a period of weeks, months, and years. Here are some basics for preparing a lesson that can be life changing — not only for your students, but also for you.

  • Read your lesson from the Scriptures at least one week before class from two or three translations.
  • Ask the question, "What does God want me to learn about him?"
  • Ask the question, "What does God want my students to learn about him?"
  • Personalize the lesson aim (in the curriculum) to your particular class. Consider what you would want your students to KNOW, DO, EXPERIENCE, or BECOME.
  • Choose the activities from your curriculum that will best help you accomplish your aim.
  • Pray as you prepare the final lesson that God will be preparing you and your students for his Spirit's work in your hearts.

Get organized and enjoy your quarter's study without a lot of weekly hassle!
